Our recent competition to find Letchworth’s most talented young musician was an outstanding success. We were overwhelmed with entries and 26 students competed in early March at St Christopher School. The four winners of each category will be performing on Wednesday, 30th April when the overall winner will be chosen and you are invited to attend.
One of the purposes of the competition was to raise the profile of Letchworth Music Club in the local community as well as to encourage and demonstrate the talents of young musicians in the area – talents that are emerging despite the continuing downgrading of the arts by successive governments of all colours, leading to young people having fewer opportunities to learn how to play instruments, and how to use their voice without straining it; and invitations to attend have so far been accepted by the Director of Hertfordshire Music Service, Ben Stevens; the Chair of North Herts District Council (Clare Billing); and the Mayor and Mayoress of Stevenage, Jim Brown and Penny Schenkel – the last three because there are students from Stevenage and Hitchin as well as Letchworth among the finalists. The music chosen by the finalists, in fact by the majority of the entrants, was not the usual sort of fare that you hear at our concerts, but the choice of music was left to the candidates, and it wasn’t their choice, but their presentation and ability as musicians that were being assessed, and in the opinion of the judges, the four finalists gave the best account of themselves on the evening of 10th March.
The evening will, of course, be free of charge, with tea, coffee and biscuits available during the pause between the performances and the judges’ announcement of the result.
Please note that the competition will begin at the earlier time of 7pm.
