Simon Marlow has enjoyed a busy musical career with frequent concert appearances in Britain and many other European countries as well as recitals in the United States, Sri Lanka and Iceland. He has broadcasted and made several recordings. Simon has worked for many years with the Medici Quartet violist, Ivo-Jan van der Werff with whom he has toured and recorded, notably a disc of all the viola/piano works of Arnold Bax. Recently Simon took part in a Dutch project to perform and record music composed by Nietzsche, which also included works by other composers who were inspired by his philosophy. As is not unusual, his life has taken a number of unexpected directions. These have included working for ten years with the Lucis Trust, an educational charity, becoming involved in various human and world welfare movements and also forays into local politics.

Since winning the woodwind category of the BBC Young Musician competition in 2010, flautist Emma Halnan (and our honorary president) has been in high demand for her solo and collaborative performances in the UK and internationally.

As a concerto soloist, Emma has performed with orchestras such as the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, London Mozart Players and the European Union Chamber Orchestra. She has performed live on BBC television and radio, including on Radio 3’s “In Tune” on multiple occasions. As an orchestral flautist, Emma has worked with ensembles including the Ulster Orchestra, London Mozart Players, BBC orchestras, Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra, English Touring Opera and English National Opera.

Emma is also a highly regarded flute teacher, teaching at Wells Cathedral School and the University of Cambridge.

Emma studied at the Royal Academy of Music, the Purcell School of Music, and privately with Robert Winn. She has been elected an Associate of the Royal Academy of Music (ARAM) in the Academy’s 2024 Honours; this is awarded to alumni of the Academy who have distinguished themselves in the music profession.
